Arkhangelskoye Estate

The Arkhangelskoye Estate is often compared to the imperial and grand ducal residences. In fact, some international guests claim that Arkhangelskoye is reminiscent of Versailles.Throughout its history Arkhangelskoye has belonged to prominent families of noble birth including the Sheremetevs, the Golitsyns, and the Yusupovs. Many members of those families left a notable mark in the history of Russia, primarily as art collectors and philanthropists. The estate complex in Arkhangelskoye began taking shape within the 18th and early 19th centuries. However, within the estate there are structures that do not fit into that time frame. The estate reached its architectural prime during the Golitsyns’ ownership. It was during this time that a luxurious residential palace was built. It was designed by the French architect Charle de Gerne in the style of mature classicism. During the Yusupovs’ ownership the celebrated Colonnade was constructed which is the burial temple vault. The Colonnade has become the architectural symbol of Arkhangelskoye. Also unique is the estate park with pavilions, sculptures and fountains. It is divided into three parts: English, French and Italian, thus making a huge territory unique and very picturesque.

Currently, the estate is home to the Arkhangelskoye Museum-Estate which has become one of the chief cultural and recreational centers of the Moscow region.
